Bricks 4 Kidz Birthday Party

Do you have a brick loving child? To say my son is OBSESSED with Lego® bricks is an understatement.  Per his request, these were a must at his birthday party.   When I heard of Bricks 4 Kidz I knew this would be the perfect option for providing entertainment and allowing me to be less involved in the party planning.  I might as well leave it up to the professionals so I could actually enjoy the party and take pictures!  Disclosure: I have been paid for this post by Bricks 4 Kidz but all of the opinions are my own.  This post is not sponsored by Lego®.

All of the guests were in brick heaven as they saw massive amounts of Lego® blocks being unloaded before their eyes.  The kids could hardly wait to get their hands on the fun.  The party was well organized and flowed nicely from one activity to another.

Legos

Here’s how our Bricks 4 Kidz birthday party unfolded:

First, each child in attendance created a mini figure from the vast array of heads, bodies, legs and accessories.  These became the party favors that they took home with them. My son was excited that everyone signed a shirt that he got to keep.

My son selected a Pokemon theme for his party.  The creative juices began flowing as the kids and adults constructed Pokemon habitats.  Check out their hard work!

Legohabitats

Next it was off to find the hidden brick pieces in the hallway.  As the kids searched for these the staff set up the next activity.

Spin Art

Groups were each given a kit where the mission was to create a motor that spins.  Then, everyone got a chance to put a paper plate on top of the spinning motor to create a work of art.

Lego Spin Art

The final activity was the zip line.  Each of the mini figures were loaded onto a platform and off they soared.  Lots of laughter and squeals erupted when the bricks crashed at the bottom.

Zip Line

Everything about my son’s party was a success!  It was so nice to walk into the room to see it set up and know that I had only had to focus on the food.  The clean up and set up were provided by the Dublin Rec Center and Bricks 4 Kidz brought all the fun.  The party was affordable and all of the parents commented on how impressed they were with the party.

Tables

What’s Included in a Party Package?

  • A 2 hour time frame party.  75 minutes of instructor time where kids (and adults too) build and create projects followed by 45 minutes for food and presents.
  • Many themes to choose from to customize your party.
  • Bricks 4 Kidz currently hosts birthday parties at the Dublin Rec Center or will come to another location.
    • The tables were set up with table clothes, plates, napkins and balloons when we arrived.
  • Each child gets to take home the Mini figure they created and the birthday child gets a t-shirt.
  • Party packages start below $200.

Frank lead the party and he amazingly held the attention of a crowd of children under the age of 6.  This is hard to do!  He was patient and very engaging.  If you are interested in scheduling a party reach out to Frank at 614-595-6253. Bricks 4 Kidz offers classes, field trips and summer camps as well.  I highly recommend Bricks 4 Kidz for your next party!

Year-End Roundup of the Best Columbus Bloggers in 2015

As a way to reflect on all that has made Columbus wonderful in 2015 I’ve gathered the best blog post from local bloggers. Donate Costumes to Kids in Need

Now that Christmas is over it is time to purge the toys and things that are no longer played with to make room for all of the new gifts.  I’ve recently learned about Create Happy Moments which is a project started by a Columbus mom.  The goal of this project is to donate new or gently used costumes to kids in the Dominican Republic who can not afford them.  This would be a great way to get children involved in helping others and would also make a fantastic service project for groups such as Brownies, Boy Scouts or a school.  I love the idea of spreading joy!

Create Happy Moments

Here’s what founder Mayra Gutierrez Betances has to say about the project Create Happy Moments:

“I collect used or new costumes for unprivileged children in the Dominican Republic for their annual Carnival and Independence Day festivities, which is held every February 27th. It is cultural tradition to dress up and parade in every village, town and cities throughout the country. As a child growing up in the Dominican Republic along with 6 other siblings, it was a challenge to get a hold of a costume for this special event as my family could not afford to buy costumes.  We made our own and it made it creative, but times have changed and so have the children.
Here in the United States, as busy parents, we do not have the time to make costumes for our kids. In addition, our children for the most part, want to wear new and of course the popular costumes for that year, and as parents, we want to make them happy, and have the means, so we buy the costumes for them. But once Halloween is over, what do we do with the gently used costumes? Some kids will wear them to play for a while, but most end up at the back of the closet forgotten or just thrown away.

Well that’s when my project kicks in! You can donate these costumes through this project and I will ship to distribute in a small school where children who come from extremely limited resources in the Dominican Republic can participate. This project will allow these children, who may otherwise not be able to experience this, wear colorful costumes while participating in the country’s tradition to dress up and enjoy the festivities and create happy childhood memories through this cultural exchange.
It has been amazing….you can go to the Facebook page Create Happy Moments to follow your donated costumes and see with us how the children can make use of your children’s good will and how they will impact the life of a child in another country. This will also serve as a teaching experience for the children in DR and for our children here in the US.

The funds raised will be used for shipping costs, packaging supplies, distribution expenses and to buy any missing accessories or to buy and complete the number of costumes needed if we don’t collect enough per number of children waiting, so that all children in the awarded school can get a costume.  Thank you!”

To arrange a drop off or pick up location contact Mayra via email at createhappymomentsdr@gmail.com or call/text 201-888-0576.

My family has several bins of dress up clothes as these are some of the most treasured items in our toy closet.  It would be a nice family activity to get the kids involved and decide what items they are willing to part with or have outgrown.  Or, perhaps we’ll take advantage of the after holiday sales and purchase new items to send.  Either way, this will make a child in the Dominican Republic very happy and we too will feel happiness knowing that we’ve made someone’s day.  I can’t wait to follow the Create Happy Moments project to see how many items are donated.

Top 3 Disney Questions Answered

You may remember Erin’s informative post this summer about 5 Disney Freebies.  If you missed it, (read it here: Freebies at Disney World).  Erin is a travel agent dishing out more Disney info that will help you when determining when to visit Walt Disney World in 2016 and the reasons that staying on property enhance your Disney experience.

Thinking about a Disney vacation in 2016?  Here are top three questions I’ve been asked in the past month about planning a Walt Disney World Vacation:

1) When should I book my Disney vacation?

2) When is the best time to go to Walt Disney World?

3) What are the benefits of staying in a Walt Disney World Resort?

Disney 2016

When should I book?

At least 6 months before travel is best.  The main reason?  Dining.  On your 180th day before travel, you’re able to make dining reservations.  If you want to eat dinner with Cinderella at “the castle” or Breakfast with Mickey at Chef Mickey’s, it’s important that you book early.  And by the way, when you book your vacation with me,  I’m the one who is up at 6 am to make those reservations for you.

When is the best time to go to Walt Disney World?

Confused about when is the best time to visit Walt Disney World?  I’m here to help!  In general, the lowest crowds and the lowest prices are when school is in session.

Here are some of my picks for the best weeks for Disney World travel 2016:

January 9th – Note:  This is Marathon Week at Disney.  Even with the influx of runners, the crowds and costs are still projected to be low.  If you need to travel in January and cannot travel the weeks listed below, this is another great option.

January 23rd- January 30th

February 20th

*February 27th*

The weeks of April 2nd through the first week in May,

The weeks of August 20th through September 24th

October 15th* -Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is great! (requires separate admission)

October 22nd* -Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is great! (requires separate admission)

October 29th* -Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is great! (requires separate admission)

November 12th* -Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is tons of fun! There are parades and activities that are specific to this event. (requires separate admission)

December 3rd – Note:  This week has projected low crowds and low prices, but it is also Pop Warner Week.  What does this mean to you?  The food courts (breakfast) and the pools will be crowded at the resorts where the athletes stay.  Traditionally the resorts that are booked are the All Star Resorts, Caribbean Beach, and sometime Port Orleans and Coronado Springs.  Stay away from these resorts and you should be fine. * These are my top picks for 2016!

Now that you know which weeks are good, which weeks should you stay away from if you don’t want crowds?

Some weeks are obvious (Christmas week, Easter week), but others may surprise you.  Here are some of the busiest times at Walt Disney World:

– January 16th – Stay away from MLK weekend if you can!
– February 6th – Could be busy. Some southern states have this week off for Mardi Gras.  Those of us in Ohio can lose sight of how seriously our friends in Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas take Mardi Gras!
– Presidents’ Day – February 15th – Stay away from this weekend if you can.
– Easter is March 27th in 2016.  The entire month of March will be moderate to high in terms of crowds and prices.  If you’d like to travel during Spring Break 2016, book ASAP to get the best choice of dining reservations and resort room options.
– Memorial Day is May 30th – Another busy week.
– The week of November 5th – Jersey week – Very busy!
– Thanksgiving Week – November 24th – Extremely busy week!  If you want to dine at some of the popular restaurants, it is so important that you book before mid May in order to be able to make your dining reservations on your 180th day before travel.
– The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is the busiest week at Walt Disney World.  If you must travel during this time, book early and get to the parks early.  It is not uncommon for the parks to fill to capacity on these days.

Don’t let high crowds scare you away!

Many people don’t have the option of taking kids out of school, and are limited to visiting Mickey and friends during peak times.  Don’t worry!  I can help you pick the parks that will be least crowded on certain days, and can give you tips on maximizing your itinerary.  I have clients who go every year at Christmas time, because it’s the only time between school and work that they can go.  They love it!  They love the crowds, they love the atmosphere, and wouldn’t dream of going any other time.  Bottom line – with a little planning and some knowing what to expect, your vacation will be magical any time that you choose to go!

Holiday Happenings at Walt Disney World

Disney begins decorating for Halloween in late August, and the decorations are complete by first Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is an event requiring separate admission that occurs on select nights in September and October.  This year, the first MNSSHP was on September 15th, and the last one was on November 1st.

Christmas decorations usually go up beginning the first of November.  All of the resorts and theme parks are decorated, and the decorations are typically complete in time for the first Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.  Like Mickey’s Halloween Party, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is a separately ticketed event.  This year, the first MVMCP was on November 8th, and the last one will be on December 8th.  Both parties do sell out, so it’s advisable that you purchase your tickets early!  The deluxe resorts at Walt Disney World have especially amazing edible holiday displays that are a must see!  The biggest edible production is the gingerbread house at Grand Floridian Resort.  The recipe uses 800 pounds of flour!  Here’s a time-lapse of the gingerbread house going up:
