Are you looking for some exciting and kid friendly books to read as we prepare for Thanksgiving? If so, check out some of my favorite Thanksgiving books for children.
‘Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by: Dav Pilkey
The classic Christmas poem has been adapted to get you in the Thanksgiving spirit. It’s an entertaining book with humor, great pictures and causes you to think about the turkey’s perspective at Thanksgiving.
10 Fat Turkeys by: Tony Johnston
Your children will find delight in this silly book about 10 fat Turkeys. Bonus: it uses rhyme and helps with counting backwards.
Balloons Over Broadway by: Melissa Sweet
This fascinating book teaches you about the life of Tony Sarg, the man who created the helium balloon puppets, which are the main feature of the Macy’s Day Parade. The mixed media pictures scattered throughout this picture book are wonderful. Melissa Sweet is a Caldecott Honor winner and you can visit her website to learn more about making moving puppets.
Visit www.melissasweet.net for craft ideas for Balloons Over Broadway and other educational ideas based on books Melissa Sweet has written and/or illustrated. Lots of fun ideas!!!
Thanksgiving books with Favorite Characters
You’ll also find many of your child’s favorite characters have seasonal books. Here’s some Thanksgiving titles you may want to check out: Pinkalicious: Thanksgiving Helper, Fancy Nancy: Our Thanksgiving Banquet, Arthur’s Thanksgiving and Pete the Cat the First Thanksgiving.
P is for Pilgrim… A Thanksgiving Alphabet by: Carol Crane
This book is more series than the others listed above. It takes you through the alphabet and gives you background information and facts about Thanksgiving. It would be a longer read for little ones so you might want to just read and discuss a few pages at a time. I know my little ones had lots of questions to ask while we read this one!
I love getting into the mood for the next upcoming holiday by reading books that pertain to the season. Be sure to follow Local Busy Bees on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to see what our family is up to this holiday season. Do you have any Thanksgiving favorites that you think I should read to my children?
